    Addicks snap up McCarthy

    07 Jun 2007 - 10:08:26

Charlton Athletic manager Alan Pardew has continued his policy of signing players from the Football League after snapping up Leicester City captain Patrick McCarthy for an initial fee of £650,000.

McCarthy, 24, has agreed a four-year contract with the Addicks and joins former Colchester United striker Chris Iwelumo and Crewe marksman Luke Varney as another new arrival at The Valley.

The Dublin-born defender made 82 appearances for the Foxes after joining from Manchester City two years ago.

McCarthy, who ended last season on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder in January, with compete with Madjid Bougherra and Souleymane Diawara for a position at centre-back in next year's Championship campaign.

"We're very pleased to make Patrick our latest signing," Charlton plc chairman Richard Murray told the club's official website.

"He has all the right attributes and that fact he was captain of Leicester City shows he is a leader and proven at Championship level."
