    Addicks close in on leaders

    05 Dec 2009 - 18:13:31

Charlton Athletic have cut Leeds United's lead at the top of the League One table to four points following Saturday's 1-0 victory over Southend United at The Valley.

Deon Burton's tenth goal of the season secured the points for Phil Parkinson's side, who took full advantage of Leeds only being able to draw 2-2 with local rivals Huddersfield Town at Elland Road.

Leeds had twice taken the lead through Robert Snodgrass and Max-Alain Gradal, but replies from Lee Novak and Jordan Rhodes ensured an entertaining West Yorkshire derby ended all-square.

Norwich City remain third after a straightforward 2-0 victory over Oldham Athletic at Carrow Road in which Wes Hoolahan and Grant Holt scored in the first half.

Colchester United remain hard on their heels after they edged out Bristol Rovers 1-0 courtesy of Kevin Lisbie's 30th-minute strike.

Hartlepool United ensured that Millwall's long return trip south was a disappointing one after coasting to a 3-0 win over the London club at Victoria Park.

Meanwhile, Wycombe Wanderers picked up a vital three points at home after coming from behind to beat fellow strugglers Stockport County by a 2-1 scoreline.

Goals from Chris Westwood and Scott Davies in the final 25 minutes took the Chairboys up to 22nd place in the table and left Stockport rock-bottom.

Tranmere Rovers climbed off the foot of the table following a 1-0 home win over Brentford in which Craig Curran struck the game's only goal.

Southampton's upward momentum continued with a 3-1 win on the road against Walsall in which hot-shot Rickie Lambert netted his 17th goal of a prolific season.

Brighton & Hove Albion gave themselves breathing space at the foot of the table after edging out Exeter City 1-0 at St James' Park.

However, Leyton Orient's slide down the table continued after they lost a five-goal thriller 3-2 to Swindon Town.

Two second-half goals from Charlie Austin earned the points for the sixth-placed Robins.

In the day's final games, Carlisle United and Gillingham played out a goalless draw, while MK Dons and Yeovil Town shared the spoils following a 2-2 stalemate at stadium:mk.
