Varney stepped down from his post after nearly 11 years at the end of the 2007/08 season, but he is now back at The Valley and will attempt to attract fresh investment to the south London club. Richard Murray, chairman of the plc, said: "Peter has a deep knowledge of the club and was a real asset to us in completing the recent £7million capital injection by the board, which has stabilised the club's financial position going forward. "The board has made it clear that the club needs to attract new levels of investment in the future, and Peter will play a specific role as an independent non-executive director to assist the board to secure that new investment."
