Striker Deon Burton fired a brace against Roy Keane's side before Parkinson explained his strategy during the Addicks' summer friendlies. Parkinson said: "I remember one particular pre-season from my playing days at Reading, when we toured Holland for a while, came back and then played another couple of foreign sides at home. "Those games were all about possession and keeping the ball, and were played at a very slow tempo. Then we got to the first game of the season and were beaten 3-0 because we weren't prepared for the style of football we were going to encounter. "We've been very careful this pre-season to make sure the players have the taste of the intensity we know we are going to come up against." Parkinson added: "Everyone knows we want to play football and we want to get the ball down and play. We have a lot of good footballers in the team, but the Crawley Town game for example, was a good reminder of the first requirement in League One - to roll our sleeves up and compete."
