Addicks ease past 10-man Colchester

Bob Peeters secured his first win as Charlton manager as his side comfortably beat 10-man Colchester 4-0 to move into the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Peeters, who took over from Jose Riga in the summer, saw the Addicks brush off their League One opponents, who had Magnus Okuonghae sent off. Yoni Buyens' (penalty), Lawrie Wilson (2) and Simon Church got the goals.

The new Charlton boss handed a senior debut to Joe Gomez, who impressed during England's European Under-17 Championship triumph in Malta last summer.

Gomez has interest Premier League teams and the promising defender looked assured on his first start.

A low-key opening came to life on 23 minutes when Okuonghae handled Franck Moussa's goalbound shot and midfielder Buyens, on loan from Standard Liege, scored from 12 yards.

Charlton striker George Tucudean, one of 10 summer signings, came close to doubling the hosts' lead, but his shot from a neat Jordan Cousins' corner was well saved by the legs of Chris Lewington.

Wilson produced two smart finishes in the space of three second-half minutes before substitute Church rounded off the scoring in the final minute to condemn Joe Dunne's side to a hefty defeat.
