Addicks chief sparks takeover talk

Murray and plc chairman Derek Chappell were due to meet fans at The Valley for a question-and-answer session, but after receiving legal advice they have postponed the event - just as they did when Dubai-based Zabeel Investments made an offer for the club last season. The move comes amid continuing reports claiming former Addicks chief executive Peter Varney is fronting a takeover bid. Murray told the club's official website: "Our advisors have warned us it would not be appropriate to attend a public meeting, and the current situation means that we would have been unable to answer or contribute to many of the likely main points of discussion, which would have been wholly unsatisfactory. "It might sound strange, but I hope fans take this as a positive thing, and of course we will rearrange the event the moment we are able to speak more freely." Chappell added: "Having to postpone this event goes against how we would rather do things, but we also have to take into account the circumstances around at the time, and we have a duty to comply with company law."
