What's gone wrong at Celtic?

One quick glance at the Scottish Premier League of late is enough to have any of your average football fan choking on their cornflakes.

With lasts seasons champions Celtic sitting in a very unfamiliar 4th place, one could be forgiven for thinking that all the 1st team had been struck down with flu since the start of the season and replaced with a bunch of kids from the youth team.

Unless of course you happen to hail from the other side of Glasgow, you may be tempted to spare a thought for any member of the Hoops faithful who are witnessing perhaps a situation not unlike that of Manchester United in the EPL after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

There are those of you who will no doubt be rejoicing at the current plight of a team who along with their Ibrox counterparts are responsible for winning 20 of the last 22 SPL titles.

Even so, the clubs drop in form is as alarming as it is equally amusing for those who like to see the underdog triumph every once in a while.

It could be said that since the demise (and increasing soon to be re-birth of Rangers), Celtic have had no realistic challenger to their throne, thus leading the way to a drop in standards of how the team both plays and in its mental desire to keep winning trophies year after year.

In essence, they have probably needed a new threat to come at them from elsewhere in the league, and up until now however it would appear that the threat is the team itself. So much so, they are in danger of putting themselves out of contention to qualify for next seasons Champions League, despite the season still being in its relatively early stages.

Unconvincing displays against Inverness County and Hamilton plus the recent 7 match ban on Alexsander Tonev for perceived racism could lead manager Ronny Delia to think that their once brightly light world is all about to come crashing down around them.

All Celtic fans will be aware of the well-worn phrase that ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’.

Come May 2015, they might well be reciting this one to themselves a few times more than is necessary during the months ahead.
