Strachan stunned at Scottish Cup KO

The Celtic manager insisted no-one could know how he was left feeling after the shock away defeat in the quarter-finals. The Parkhead side travelled to New St Mirren Park a week after thrashing the Buddies 7-0 at Parkhead in the SPL, and were firm favourites to make it a league and cup double over the Paisley side. However, Billy Mehmet's second-half penalty gave Saints their first cup victory over the Hoops in 47 years and carried them into the semis for the first time since they won the competition in 1987. Strachan looked shellshocked as he addressed the media afterwards. When he was asked how disappointed he was, he replied: "I can't tell you because you will never understand it unless you are me. "I'm sorry about that, but that's the way it goes. "We are out and we didn't deserve to be anything other than out. "We might have had a replay but we are out and it's very hard to find excuses. "We just didn't play well enough to go through to the next round. "It wasn't a tactical game and the weather meant you couldn't move the ball around that much but we are not going to complain about that. "The fact is they played well and we didn't do enough to win the game." Strachan and Celtic will quickly turn their attention to next week's Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Rangers at Hampden. The Hoops boss said: "I'm just disappointed about this game just now. "We will look at that game when we get together tomorrow, but I will start thinking about it when I get on the bus." St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson had special praise for goalkeeper Chris Smith whose late save from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's header prevented a replay. Smith was castigated for his performance in the 7-0 defeat last week but MacPherson said: "I thought every single one of my players were outstanding. "There was a lot of criticism after last week, some of it justified and some extremely difficult to take and because of that, special mention has to be given to Chris Smith. "He showed what he was all about today, there was good decision-making in what was difficult conditions for every player. "He looked very confident and assured. "I know Chris better than most, I signed him for St Mirren because I saw something in him and I don't suddenly change my opinion because he might have had a poor game. "He's still got a lot to work on but he's a talented 'keeper. "He will probably feel proud of himself in the morning." MacPherson then introduced a moment of sobriety to the historic occasion by saying: "The players should enjoy the moment but they should not get too high. "We said to them last week not to get too low because it's strange how football can suddenly turn around." Goal hero Mehmet is now looking for a place in the Hampden final in May. He said: "It's a massive result for the club and the players are all buzzing. "I don't care who we get in the semi-finals because you never know what can happen in football. "Hopefully we can go all the way to the final."
