Stokes up for challenge as Celtic host 'Well

Celtic are looking to reclaim second place in the Scottish Premier League when they take on Motherwell at Parkhead on Saturday.

Neil Lennon's side sit a point behind Saturday's visitors and rivals Rangers at the top of the SPL, although the Fir Park side have played a game more.

Motherwell have had a flying start to the season, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Rangers.

However, Celtic were boosted by a couple of late additions to their squad with left-back Badr El Kaddouri joining on a six-month loan deal from Dynamo Kiev and Sierra Leone striker Mohamed Bangura signing from AIK Stockholm.

Bangura's arrival will provide competition in attack for Anthony Stokes, Gary Hooper and Georgios Samaras.

However, Irish striker Stokes, who joined the Parkhead club on deadline day last season, insists he's up for the challenge and has set himself a target of netting 20 goals this campaign after scoring 17 last time round.

"I think my game has improved. I didn't score as many goals as I did the previous season at Hibs, so hopefully this year I can really knuckle down and get over the 20-goal mark and try and improve on that," Stokes said.

"That's the sort of pressure every player wants to be under as you know you're at a big club, at a club striving for success and one that wants to do well. It's just something we have to take - it's part and parcel of it."

Celtic will be without Emilio Izaguirre, Glenn Loovens and Thomas Rogne through injury.

Meanwhile, Motherwell striker Jamie Murphy says his side need to play with belief if they want to take anything from the game.

"I think that is the key if you want to take anything from either of the Old Firm and especially at their grounds," Murphy said.

"We believe we are a better side than last year and that the players brought in have improved us."

Celtic's Old Firm foes Rangers could heap the pressure on their rivals by increasing their lead at the top of the SPL with a win away to Dundee United in Saturday's early game.

Ally McCoist's side are unbeaten in their past seven trips to Tayside but the Rangers manager says his players will be in for a tough game.

"We enjoy going up to Tannadice but the one thing you're guaranteed of there is a really difficult game," McCoist said.

"We like the battle and the physical aspect and we've had some good days up there in recent seasons.

"At the same time, we've really had to earn them and if we're going to get a result this weekend, we are going to have to work very hard for that too."

The Rangers manager will be without on-loan Arsenal man Kyle Bartley, who is recovering from a hernia operation, while David Weir and Lee Wallace remain sidelined.

Elsewhere on Saturday, struggling Inverness Caledonian Thistle take on Hearts, who are looking to break into the top three following their morale-boosting win in the Edinburgh derby prior to the international break.

Dunfermline have settled back into life in the SPL well and the sixth placed outfit travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock, and it is a battle of the saints in Paisley as St Mirren take on St Johnstone.

On Sunday, bottom of the table Hibernian take on fellow strugglers Aberdeen at Pittodrie in a basement battle.
