SFA to review Loovens incident

The Dutchman caught Rangers midfielder Edu with his studs after making a clearance during his side's 1-0 Old Firm derby defeat at Ibrox. An SFA spokesman said: "Referee Craig Thomson confirmed he did not witness the incident so it has been referred to a review panel to determine whether or not the player has a case to answer in terms of his alleged misconduct." Loovens, who replaced injured captain Stephen McManus for the game, faces a possible suspension but he will not miss any games during the Scottish Premier League run-in. Although the SFA are likely to convene a review panel before the end of the week, this meeting will not determine his potential punishment. The review panel would either throw out the case or refer it to the SFA's disciplinary committee, whose next meeting will be held after the end of the season. However, Loovens could face missing out on games next season if he is found guilty. The former Feyenoord and Cardiff player appeared to rake his studs into Edu after volleying a clearance. The American looked at one stage like he would have to go off after suffering an injury in the back of his knee, but came back on to the field following treatment. Edu helped Rangers hold on to the 1-0 lead given to them by Steven Davis, which took them two points clear of the champions at the top of the SPL. The SFA review matches every Monday morning and controversial incidents that have been missed by the match referee can be referred to the review panel.
