Safety first

It is better to be safe than sorry. Celtic are right behind police advice to call off today's game against Kilmarnock despite reservations from the SPL and the improving weather conditions. On Thursday afternoon the SPL announced that games at Parkhead and Tannadice, where Motherwell were due to visit, had been postponed on the advice of the respective police forces. Chief executive Neil Doncaster was surprised the police had handed out the advice more than 48 hours before kick-off, especially with a "substantial thaw forecast". However, Celtic declared they were happy with the recommendation and decision as the safety of their supporters was "paramount". A club spokesperson went on: "Staging a match at Celtic Park is a major event with around 50,000 supporters potentially making their way to the stadium. It is vitally important that we understand the expertise and experience of the police regarding this issue and we fully respect the decision of Strathclyde Police. While we would all have liked the game to go ahead, we fully understand the view of Strathclyde Police in not wishing to put supporters at risk."
