Mowbray out to prove Gannon wrong
The Old Firm game in question, which dates back to October 4, ended in a 2-1 defeat for Mowbray's side.[LNB]Celtic's goal that day came via an Aiden McGeady spot kick, but referee Thomson controversially apologised following the game for failing to apprehend Light Blues' skipper David Weir when he seemed to foul Shaun Maloney inside the Ranger's penalty area.[LNB]Ahead of Celtic's visit to Fir Park on Saturday, Gannon, amid stinging criticism of the standard of referees in the SPL, pointed to the possible repercussions of what he perceived to be Thomson's poor display in the most recent Old Firm game.[LNB]Celtic have since clawed their way back to the top of the table and are two points ahead of Rangers, although Walter Smith's side have a game in hand.[LNB]When asked about Gannon's comments, Mowbray said: "I think Mr Thomson came out and said he made a mistake which is unusual, I think, but there you go.[LNB]"Let's hope it doesn't cost us the title, let's hope we have enough games to make sure we can stay top of the league."[LNB]Asked to compare the standards of officials north and south of the border, the former West Brom boss cautiously replied that SPL officials do come under more scrutiny.[LNB]He said: "Whilst it is humorous for you to ask those questions, it can get me into trouble.[LNB]"The criteria was agreed with everyone at the start of the season that we wouldn't talk out against referees and if Jim has taken a decision and crossed that line then he must feel strongly about it.[LNB]"I think it is a totally different environment they work in, it has been called the goldfish bowl of Scottish football.[LNB]"There are only 12 teams in the SPL and six referees refereeing those big games every week and they are under a lot of scrutiny.[LNB]"It is a bigger bowl down in England and I'm sure the officials make the sorts of judgements and calls but it gets a lot more scrutinised up here."[LNB][LNB]
