McInnes: Old Firm duo won't leave

The debate over Celtic and Rangers joining the English Premier League has been reignited in recent days, with both camps reiterating their desire to leave the Scottish Premier League to play south of the border. Such a move would no doubt make Scotland's top-flight more competitive but could be a disaster financially for the 10 clubs left behind. However, McInnes insists such a move is unlikely because the Old Firm are simply not wanted in England. "It's not a concern for me at this moment in time," said the Saints boss. "We have been here before and it's been talked about over the past 15 years or so. Whether it has gained a bit more momentum, I don't know. "The English Premiership will decide if they need them, it won't be Rangers and Celtic who decide. "If they feel they need to add something to their product down there - which I don't think they do at the minute - then it could be a possibility. "But they will be the ones who will dictate it and I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future." McInnes can understand why the Old Firm are keen on the prospect of decamping down south but insists they should focus on improving the SPL instead. "There is a huge attraction there," he said. "The English Premiership is great to watch, the money is there, the glamour is there and the profile. "But there was a lot of good about our league last year as well and I think sometimes we are too quick to condemn it. "We should be trying together to make this the most attractive product we can in Scotland because it is important to so many people." While Celtic and Rangers are desperate to leave the SPL, Saints are equally determined to remain there, having won promotion from the Irn-Bru First Division last season. McInnes said: "We know how difficult it is to stay in the SPL and it's a challenge we have to meet. "We need to meet that every week and I think we are good enough to stay there and the players do as well. "If we can get two or three wins back to back, it makes a heck of a difference. "We have a difficult game coming up against Rangers on Saturday but, in most of the games we have played, they could easily have been wins. "There will be a lot of games this season where there will be a thin line between winning and losing. "It's just important that we pick up more wins than losses in those games. There are certainly points there to be won."
