McGarvery: Jan should leave Hoops

The Holland international, 30, came on as a second-half substitute for Scott McDonald against Hamilton at Celtic Park on Saturday to score his first goal for the Hoops since last September when he notched twice in a 3-2 win over Aberdeen. Georgios Samaras also ended his drought which dated back to the beginning of January with a goal either side of an Aiden McGeady strike. Vennegoor of Hesselink's current deal ends in the summer and manager Gordon Strachan, who, after the game on Saturday praised the Dutchman's professionalism during his recent barren spell, has indicated that he wants the former PSV Eindhoven player to extend his stay at the club. McGarvey, who played for the Parkhead club between 1980 and 1985, believes the apparent return to goalscoring form of Samaras and Vennegoor of Hesselink will give the champions an "incredible boost" in their bid to win their fourth title in succession. However, the former Scotland player believes Vennegoor of Hesselink has reached the end of the line at Celtic. "The goals against Accies would have given both players an incredible boost," said McGarvey. "Two forwards who could not score, getting back on the goal trail again is great news for Celtic. "Scott McDonald will always score goals, the midfielders are chipping in so it's all looking good for Celtic. "But it doesn't matter if Vennegoor of Hesselink scores another 10 goals between now and the end of the season, he should go. "He is injured all the time and always seems to be out for long parts of the season. "The same people get injured every season and the same players play most of the games every season. "Vennegoor of Hesselink is obviously injury-prone and that only gets worse as a player gets older. "So why should Celtic offer him a new contract? "Gordon has been praising him probably to keep his confidence up but I would have sold him last year." Rangers stay three points behind Celtic following victory over Falkirk and McGarvey believes the Ibrox club have bolstered their title chances by laying down the law to skipper Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor. After a Sunday-morning drinking session led to the Ibrox duo being dropped for Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Wednesday, Rangers boss Walter Smith reacted angrily to the apparent V-signs both players made as they sat on the Hampden bench. Ferguson was stripped of his captaincy at Ibrox and both players were suspended without pay for a fortnight. McGarvey believes that anything other than the action taken by the Ibrox hierarchy would have brought the Light Blues' title challenge to an immediate halt. "Rangers are struggling, they are having disciplinary problems and financial problems," McGarvey said. "But Walter Smith had to act decisively and he made the right decision. "It gives Rangers a better chance of winning the title in my opinion. "If Walter had shown weakness then the team would have fallen apart. "All this carry-on would have given Celtic a boost but the players left him without an option. "Can Walter Smith and Ally McCoist rise above this and win the league? If they do, then it would be a remarkable achievement." While Rangers will continue to pursue Celtic at the top of the SPL, an even more exciting end to the season is shaping up in the bottom half of the table. Accies boss Billy Reid, however, dismissed the notion that the comprehensive defeat at Celtic Park, in which his side at no time threatened to cause a shock result, will have a knock-on effect in the battle to avoid relegation. He said: "I don't worry about that at all, we've had defeats before. We are fine, our fitness levels are fine. "We are aware that there are going to be big games in the next few weeks, the same as all the clubs at the bottom of the table. "We have a belief in what we are doing and we are not worried about that. "When the split comes you are playing against teams around you, and that will decide what is going to happen. "I always thought that was going to be the case. There are five teams down there and we have everything to play for."
