McDonald wants Strachan to stay

The Hoops boss collected his sixth trophy in three and a half seasons with a victory over rivals Rangers at Hampden. Extra-time goals by former Celtic youth players Darren O'Dea and Aiden McGeady helped the Parkhead side deservedly wrest the trophy back from Ibrox. Strachan's latest success may only temporarily placate the rump of Celtic fans who have never taken to him since he replaced Martin O'Neill in the summer of 2005 but McDonald, in Glasgow to promote the player of the year awards for the Scottish footballers' union, PFA Scotland, gave his boss the ultimate vote of confidence. "I love working with the manager and the coaching staff, they have been fantastic for me since I came to this club," the former Motherwell player said. "I want the gaffer to stay forever, for as long as he wants to. "Once again it's another trophy in the cabinet for the club and the manager. "He has been phenomenal since he came to the club, his record speaks for itself and hopefully we can win another one before the end of the season." McDonald is not allowed to vote for anyone inside the Parkhead dressing room for the players' player of the year but he made a strong case for team mate Scott Brown who was was voted man of the match at Hampden. The Australia international said: "Scott Brown has been brilliant for us this season as everyone knows and Gary Caldwell is a candidate as well for his performances throughout, whether it be at centre-half or, as we seen on Sunday, in midfield. "They are two who would be serious candidates. "There is a couple of Rangers players as well, Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis and outside that, Lee Wilkie has been a real rock for Dundee United, a good leader. "This season players have had a couple of months where they have done exceptionally well, then someone else has taken over so it's going to be interesting to see how the voting goes. "But Brown has played like he did on Sunday all season. "He is some character. The energy levels that guy has is unbelievable. "He was jumping up and down last night - I'm sure he still is right now. "He really drives us forward as a team and he has shown that he is a big player for us. "Even last year, when he got a bit of stick, he dealt with it phenomenally, and continues to get better and better."
