Matthews seeking double boost

Adam Matthews has targeted back-to-back wins against Rennes and Motherwell as Celtic seek a much-needed boost in their European and domestic campaigns.

First up for the Hoops is the visit of Rennes at Parkhead in the Europa League, as they aim to bolster their hopes of qualifying from Group I.

Celtic then travel to second-placed Motherwell - who sit three points ahead of Neil Lennon's men - hoping to haul themselves back into contention in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Sunday, with leaders Rangers now 12 points ahead of their Glasgow rivals. Full-back Matthews said: "A win from both games would give us a massive boost."

He added: "Rennes are a good team and it will be a good test but I'm fully confident we can get the three points and that will put us in a good position in the European group. Hopefully we can also get a good result in Sunday's game.

"We've had some poor results and we have been up and down with our form so hopefully we can get a good result against Rennes and that can put us on a little run. We know we are capable of better. We've just got to be consistent and keep it going. I'm not sure what it's down to.

"We've had a few injuries and we're not using that as an excuse, but we are missing key players and that doesn't help. We just don't seem to be able to play for 90 minutes as well as we can but hopefully we can start doing that."

Lennon faces a selection headache for the clash, with Ki Sung-yueng a doubt with a virus and Joe Ledley and Charlie Mulgrew out with calf and hamstring injuries respectively.

Mo Bangura remains on the sidelines with a knee problem, while Badr El-Kaddouri is cup-tied and Thomas Rogne was not registered for the Europa League.

Lennon said: "I've still got a good squad of players remaining and the responsibility lies with them to put in strong performances. We've still got a decent squad. This will be a difficult game but it's one that we are all looking forward to."

On the threat posed by Rennes, he added: "They are an excellent counter-attacking side. We had them watched again at the weekend and they are strong and athletic with some very good footballers in the team. We have to be wary of that, particularly when we're trying to take the game to them."
