Lennon sets sights on survival

New St Mirren manager Danny Lennon admits Clydesdale Bank Premier League survival is his main aim next season.

The 40-year-old has replaced Gus MacPherson at the helm following a successful spell with Cowdenbeath, though he is well aware that his targets will be different with Saints in the SPL and says retaining their top-flight status is his number one priority.

"We've got to be realistic about what our aims and objectives are going to be," said Lennon. "It will be survival - that's our main objective, that we remain a Premier League club."

He added: "I think you've got to set your sights realistically but go in there a little bit higher because, if you go in a bit lower, once you reach those targets, individuals can take their eye off the ball.

"My philosophy is that I will try to bring entertaining, exciting football for the supporters but that will be based upon discipline and solid defending also.

"I was told we couldn't play football at Cowdenbeath but we did and came through the Second and Third Divisions so my philosophy won't change."

Lennon believes his lack of experience in Scottish football's top division will not be a problem as he embarks on his biggest managerial challenge so far.

He said: "The great thing about coaching and managing is that football always remains the same, whether I'm managing Cowdenbeath or St Mirren or at the San Siro.

"Football still remains the same, it's just that you are working with a bigger budget and more people.

"I had a wonderful grounding at Cowdenbeath - you name it, I did it. Here, there is a staff that is capable of giving me the support and advice that I need."
