Lack-lustre Bhoys win again
26 Sep 2009 - 17:24:25
Celtic extended their lead over Rangers at the top of the table to four points with an unimpressive 2-0 victory at St Mirren while Walter Smith's side could only draw 0-0 with Aberdeen, their third successive goalless draw.
Pat McCourt scored a superb individual effort to give Tony Mowbray's side a first-half lead but the Bhoys struggled to get out of first gear and they only made the points safe when Shaun Maloney curled home a second goal with 12 minutes left.
Nacho Novo went closest to breaking the deadlock at Ibrox when he hit the post but Rangers had to settle for a point in a goalless draw with Mark McGhee's fifth-placed Aberdeen side.
Winless St Johnstone remain rooted to the foot of the table after slumping to a 3-2 home defeat to Dundee United.
Former Everton, Bradford City and Huddersfield Town striker Danny Cadamarteri gave Craig Levein's side an early lead from the penalty spot after Dave MacKay had handled the ball.
However, Saints equalised immediately when Filipe Morais' effort was deflected into his own net by Darren Dods.
Andy Webster restored the visitors' lead only for Martin Hardie to curl in a second equaliser with a free-kick.
It looked like the points would be shared until substitute David Goodwillie forced in a late winner for the Terrors who ended the game with ten men when Danny Swanson was dismissed.
Second-half strikes by Derek Riordan and Merouane Zemmama helped third-placed Hibernian win 3-1 at Motherwell.
Colin Nish's early strike was cancelled out by a Mark Reynolds header ten minutes before the break but Riordan curled a delightful shot home early in the second half and Zemmama made it 3-1 with a tremendous free-kick.
Hearts are seventh after struggling to a lack-lustre 2-1 win against Hamilton Academical at Tynecastle.
Michael Stewart opened the scoring from the spot before Spanish midfielder Jesus Manuel Suso doubled their advantage.
Marco Paixao pulled one back for Accies but it was not enough for Billy Reid's side.
Falkirk and Kilmarnock remain in the bottom half of the table following their 0-0 draw at the Falkirk Stadium.
