Hoops boss gives Caldwell advice

Marc-Antoine Fortune and Shaun Maloney both grabbed doubles and Scott McDonald scored as the Hoops cruised to victory over Saints in clash at Parkhead on Saturday. It was, however, another game that Caldwell will want to forget. The Celtic defender scored an own goal in the 2-0 Champions League play-off defeat against Arsenal at Parkhead on Tuesday, less than a week after being sent off for Scotland in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by Norway in Oslo. And with the home side cruising 2-0 through Fortune's first goal for the Hoops since signing from Nancy in the summer, and a header from Maloney, Caldwell contrived to give Saints a lifeline. His attempt to head an Alan Main clearance to Glenn Loovens was miscued to Perth striker Collins Samuel who drove a wonderful strike from 25 yards past Artur Boruc. Ultimately, Caldwell's mistake made little difference but Mowbray is hoping to see the Scotland defender erase the erratic part of his game. The Celtic boss said: "He is an outstanding individual, and I just said to him there, 'Don't be your own worst enemy, don't feed the monster that is chasing you.' "Do your job, be consistent, week-in, week-out. "He understands that and he will have the opportunity week-in, week-out to be a top player for us because he will play most weeks." Jody Morris scored a late consolation which also irked Mowbray, who claimed he had no concerns of Fortune's barren spell leading up to the game. "I would have preferred 5-0," the Celtic boss said "The negative was obviously the goals that we conceded but I was happy that Fortune got off the mark with two clinical finishes. "Marc has been fine from day one and I have had no concerns about him. "It seems to be a media-driven thing that because the boy cost £3million he should be scoring goals every game. "But I judge him on his quality and work rate and from day one he has given that. "He has got to add goals and I'm sure he will but I don't think he lives off goals and as long as he contributes to the team I will be happy." Fortune claimed he had no concerns about finally breaking his duck but admitted he was frustrated at his second sitter which would have won him the match ball. "I was really happy because it was at home and we won so everything was fine," the former Nancy striker said. "I wasn't worrying me, I knew that I would score one day, there was no doubt about that. "I should have scored a hat-trick, I was disappointed that I didn't score and that is maybe the only black mark today." St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes admits he took some "perverse" pleasure in watching Celtic and their Glasgow-born, Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady. "In a perverse sort of way I enjoyed watching Celtic play," he said. "Aiden McGeady is a special player, I wish he was Scottish. "He was magnificent at times, sucking two or three players to the ball. "He looks to have a real understanding of what his manager is trying to do. "Collin Samuel was magnificent for us and we can take confidence from that and we played. "But we needed to defend crosses in to the box better. "We won't be the only team who will lose five goals at Celtic Park this season, it's how you react to that and I'm looking for a reaction from my players." Morris rebuked himself for giving the ball away for Maloney's second goal after the break which put Celtic 3-1 up and all but ended the contest. "I made a stupid mistake trying to play the ball through the middle of the park," the former Chelsea midfielder said. "Ultimately it was an important goal and it gave Celtic confidence. "My goal didn't make up for it, I'm more annoyed that I made that stupid mistake." Morris refused to rule Celtic out of shocking Arsenal in the second leg of their Champions League play-off, saying: "Arsenal are a top side, one of the best sides in European. "It is tough for any team to go to the Emirates but the way Celtic played against them in the first leg, they can take encouragement and if they score an early goal, then anything is possible."
