Hooper aiming to top the charts

Celtic striker Gary Hooper has set his sights on more goals this season as he bids to beat team-mate Anthony Stokes in the scoring charts.

Both players were on target as the Hoops ran out 3-1 winners over Hibernian in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Wednesday night, with Stokes setting the ball rolling with the opener, before Hooper claimed a double. Stokes still remains in front with 19 goals to Hooper's 17 but the Englishman says there is still time for him to come out on top.

He said: "He's two ahead of me in total and I'm one ahead in league goals. There are nine games left and I just hope I keep scoring. It's got to be about the league goals!"

Hooper should have added to his own tally against Hibs but blew his chance of a hat-trick when he missed a penalty, having already converted from the spot earlier in the game.

But he refused to dwell too much on the wasted opportunity, choosing to focus instead on what was an emphatic win for Celtic.

He said: "I was pleased that we got the three points first of all and I was pleased with my two goals. I got the two goals in the first half and the first half performance was good. The penalty came and I don't know why I changed sides really."

The win allowed Celtic to reclaim top spot in the SPL with a two-point advantage, after Rangers had briefly moved into pole position 24 hours earlier.

Liam Miller pulled a goal back for Hibs from the penalty spot in the second half but the game was all but over as a contest by half-time and boss Colin Calderwood urged his players to learn from a hard lesson.

He said: "We've got to do better and we've got to produce better defensively than we did in the first half. We were behind too early in the game.

"It was a good education for us in terms of development as a team and as players but we need to see a rapid improvement."
