Doncaster vows to find solution

Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster has vowed to continue working to find a consensus and instigate much-needed change in the Scottish game, whatever the outcome of next week's general meeting.

All 12 Clydesdale Bank Premier League clubs will reconvene at Hampden Park next Monday to further discuss the changes proposed by the SPL's strategic review group, headed by Doncaster.

"It's incumbent upon us to try and encourage a resolution and a consensus, but you can't move forward without that consensus. Whatever happens on Monday we'll keep working to try and achieve that consensus," said Doncaster.

Following last Tuesday's meeting, Doncaster insisted a consensus had been achieved, but scepticism surfaced from Dundee United, Inverness, Kilmarnock and St Mirren over proposals which included an SPL 1 and SPL 2, each comprised of 10 teams.

Doncaster insisted there is a desire to alter the Scottish game and even if his suggestions are not accepted, change must be found.

He said: "I believe, as indeed I think everyone associated with the game believes, that we need change. You've got a total consensus for change, the issue, as ever, remains what that change looks like."

Doncaster insisted only after an agreement is reached will a vote take place.

"The meeting on Monday has always been and remains about what the clubs want and what they don't want," he added. "Yes, there will be voting on elements or the whole of the plan, but it will only be an in-principle vote.

"Everything you do is a vote. You need a consensus emerging from the meeting, whether you ask people to put their hands in the air or not. The concept of a formal vote is a red herring, because you can't have a formal vote on anything other than a full set of documents and a revised set of rules.

"That can't happen until you've got approval or otherwise in principle. It's just a rubber-stamping exercise."
