Celtic friendly could get go-ahead

AZ Alkmaar are hoping to reschedule their friendly against Celtic for Tuesday or Wednesday next week - as long as there is no repeat of the travel chaos caused by an erupting Icelandic volcano.

The clubs were due to meet at Parkhead tonight but the Hoops announced yesterday the fixture had been postponed amid the grounding of many flights across western Europe due to an ash cloud emanating from Mount Eyjafjallajokull.

All British airports were reopened last night and AZ spokesman Daan Schippers said in the Daily Mail: "We are in talks with Celtic to play the game either on Tuesday or Wednesday next week."

He added: "Obviously, that is dependent on whether Celtic agree to this.

"There was nothing that could be done to avoid postponing the game. Our flight was cancelled."
