Caldwell refuses to give up hope
The Hoops trail Arsenal 2-0 heading into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium and must produce something outstanding if they are to snatch a place in the group stages from Arsene Wenger's side.
But Caldwell insists his team-mates have drawn confidence from their recent 2-0 triumph at Dinamo Moscow - their first away win in Europe in 23 matches.
"It's a massive task - we know that. We saw in the first game how good they are," he said.
"A 2-0 deficit is big but you have to believe we can do something.
"To do that we'll have to score the first goal and probably get a few breaks on the night.
"We'll have to score first to make them agitated and we have the players to do that.
"For us to win would be a great result because Arsenal are a great club.
"It would be massive, especially as we will have overturned a two-goal deficit. Before the game in Moscow people said we were out and that Scottish football was in crisis.
"But 90 minutes later we produced on of our best results ever. We have to keep our heads and perform to our ability."
Caldwell's 72nd minute own goal helped Arsenal establish their first-leg lead, continuing a dismal start to the season for the Scotland centre-back.
He was sent off against Norway earlier this month and also gifted St Johnstone a goal on Saturday.
"That's life. Football's about ups and downs. I've had plenty of downs in the past," said Caldwell.
"I look at playing for your country and in Champions League games as a positive.
"I'll have to learn from the mistakes I've made over the past couple off games and improve."
