Caldwell: Dinamo test was Dons warm-up

The Parkhead side upset the odds at the Arena-Khimki on Wednesday night when, for the first time in the club's history, they won a European tie after losing the first leg at home. Goals from Scott McDonald and substitute Georgios Samaras gave the Parkhead side a 2-1 aggregate win and a place in Friday's Champions League play-off draw in Nyon. Stand-in skipper Caldwell believes the early start to Celtic's European campaign will have a knock-on effect domestically when they face Aberdeen. "That victory does give us an impetus going in to the SPL season," the Scotland defender said. "They were two really competitive games against Dinamo. "They are a really good side and it was a tough, tough tie to get through but that will help us going in to the league campaign. "Other teams won't have had two games like that so they will help us and we should hit the ground running when the league starts." Caldwell insists the extra week's training following last week's 1-0 defeat by Dinamo at Celtic Park proved - as he had predicted - to be significant in Khimki. "We thought we could go to Russia and get the result - the week in between games really helped us," he said. "We looked a yard quicker and we dominated the whole game. "They were hard to break down and, towards the end of the first half, we were running out of ideas but the goal really settled us. "I thought we were really dominant and it was a matter of time before we scored, but it did come really late."
