Burley sweating on Brown update

The Celtic midfielder was booked in to see a Harley Street expert after continuing to suffer discomfort in his ankle despite undergoing surgery in May. Burley has already lost four of his original squad for the Yokohama match. Celtic left-back Danny Fox (hamstring), Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson (knee) and Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass (leg) all missed their club's matches at the weekend. Birmingham striker Garry O'Connor also pulled out after limping through the final stages of City's 2-1 defeat at Burnley. Burley called up Hearts full-back Lee Wallace and Aberdeen striker Lee Miller but another withdrawal would leave him with just 16 outfield players. Celtic manager Tony Mowbray admitted last month he was considering resting Brown to prevent him missing crucial matches later in the season. Mark Venus, Mowbray's assistant, more recently questioned whether Brown should play for Scotland while still being affected by the ankle issue, which forced him to miss the start of the season. Two of Brown's Celtic team-mates are also potential doubts after picking up injuries in Sunday's 2-1 defeat by Rangers. Shaun Maloney suffered an Achilles problem and Stephen McManus had stitches inserted in a head wound. While Fox's injury has postponed his Old Firm debut and Scotland introduction, it has paved the way for Wallace to make the step up from the under-21s. "I was a lot more confident last season and hopefully this will help me keep improving as I'll be training with a lot of top-quality players," the 22-year-old told Hearts News. "It may be a friendly but Japan are still a top team and of course I want to play. "I know I wasn't in the original squad but I just accepted that and knew I just had to get on with my game and keep doing what I had been doing. "I think the manager has seen me often enough and knows what I can do and I just want to go there and enjoy the experience." Meanwhile, Scotland's next match after Japan is likely to be in Wales on November 14. A statement from the Football Association of Wales said: "Negotiations are continuing with Scotland about the possibility of a match between the two countries at the new City of Cardiff Stadium, but final agreement has not yet been reached. An announcement is expected soon."
