Brown hopes to catch Holland out

The Scots know they head into Saturday's World Cup qualifier as major underdogs against a nation who sit top of Group Nine with a 100 per cent record. And the Dutch only have to look at their last meeting with Scotland - a 6-0 thrashing at the same venue back in 2003 - to bolster confidence further. But that is exactly the sort of attitude Brown is hoping for, claiming George Burley's men will be much more dangerous if the Dutch have already written them off. He said: "If they think they are better than us, hopefully they won't give as much and we can show we are fitter and stronger. "Hopefully they think 'it's just Scotland' and think they can get five or six goals and we can maybe surprise them. "If you look at Paris, it can be done. We defended well and Faddy scored a great goal," he added, referring to James McFadden's strike which earned a 1-0 win over France in the Parc des Princes 18 months ago and helped take Scotland to within touching distance of Euro 2008. But the Hoops hardman concedes that an even bigger challenge could be awaiting them in Holland. He said: "I watched a lot of their games in Euro 2008. They were very good. They don't have a lot of pace, do they! "It will probably be one of the biggest tests of our careers because they have pace, strength and players who can control the ball. "I wonder, though, if they like people getting in their faces and putting them under pressure. Maybe they will then make mistakes. "We are young and fit and want to upset their rhythm. We don't just want to sit back all the time. We are capable of playing many ways. "The plan is to try to take the game to them but that will be hard to do. We don't know what the park is like. "We can't just sit back with 10 men behind the ball. We have to attack when it is right to do so and try to create a few chances. "They throw so many people forward there is always a chance they can leave space for us to counter-attack. We will put them under pressure and see how they react." Burley's tenure has been beset with call-offs and the double-header against Holland and Iceland has been no different, with Paul Hartley the latest to withdraw from the squad. But Celtic team-mate Brown insisted: "It gives the lads who have not been involved as regularly a chance to show what they can do and how they can handle the big occasion. "You can get injuries at any time, be it in a game, in training or even away from football. It is just your luck." Scotland trail Holland in second spot with just four points from three games against Macedonia, Iceland and Norway. "None of us think it is meaningless," said Brown. "We need to try to get as many points as we can, if we get one or three we will be delighted. "If we come away with nothing we have a chance to bounce back right away."
