Bhoys edge to Accies victory
26 Dec 2009 - 17:10:47
Celtic moved to within one point of SPL leaders Rangers with a laboured 2-0 victory over Hamilton Academical at Parkhead.
The Bhoys took the lead after 13 minutes when Glenn Loovens met Barry Robson's near-post corner with a volley that proved too strong for Accies goalkeeper Tomas Cerny to save.
The home side then failed to add to their lead and were almost made to pay late on when the visitors had a goal disallowed for a handball by Flavio Paixiao, before Niall McGinn eased the nerves with a second goal for the Bhoys.
Dundee United were unable to break down Kilmarnock and had to settle for a goalless draw at Tannadice.
Hearts move up to fifth place in the table thanks to a 1-0 win at rock-bottom Falkirk, with Michael Stewart netting the only goal of the game from the penalty spot just before half-time.
Injury-jinxed striker Peter MacDonald scored his first goals since August 2008 to earn St Johnstone a 3-1 victory at Motherwell.
The Steelmen got their noses in front six minutes before half-time when midfielder Steve Jennings headed home Yassin Moutaouakil's cross to record his first goal for the Fir Park club.
However, MacDonald dominated proceedings after the break, drawing the Saints level nine minutes after the restart and giving them the lead three minutes later.
His crowning moment came 20 minutes from time as he completed his hat-trick with a header from Chris Millar's cross.
St Mirren's clash with Aberdeen was called off at lunchtime due to safety concerns for spectators making their way to the game at St Mirren Park.
