Strachan quit as manager on Monday after failing in his quest to secure a fourth successive Scottish Premier League title at the weekend. His departure has paved the way for a new era in the east end of Glasgow. And, with crucial Champions League qualifiers looming this summer, Peter Rafferty - President of the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs - wants the new man in place as soon as possible. He said: "We have to qualify for Europe and the players will be back training in early July so the club has to get a new manager in place to make the changes he wants to make. The sooner that happens the better." Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has already emerged as a contender for the job and Rafferty would like to see club bosses opt for someone with a Celtic background. He said: "There are numerous names and I'm not here to make guesses about who the club might be interested in. "But traditionally we have seen that our better managers, our successful managers, have been ex-players or people who knew about the football club and it's history and heritage. "Maybe someone of that ilk would please a lot of fans." Strachan's decision to walk away from Celtic came just 24 hours after Rangers clinched the SPL title on the final day of the season. And Rafferty admitted: "I have to say I don't suppose it comes as any great surprise. "The season, unfortunately, hasn't gone as well for us as we would have liked even though it went to the last game. "I would just like to thank Gordon Strachan for the work he has done over the last four seasons, it was definitely a successful time. "The biggest thing you can do when you start out on any campaign is to win the league and he got three in a row, which is no mean feat. "This season hasn't been just as successful but I wish him well wherever he moves on to." Celtic fans were split in their opinion of Strachan but Rafferty believes his success over the last four years cannot be argued with. "People have got their own views, some supporters liked him, some didn't," he said. "But that is by the by, he did the job he was asked to do. At the end of the day, you can only do that. "The personalities we have had over the years have all been different and have all had different qualities."
