Bertie: It's not like good Auld days

09 March 2009 14:56
Auld starred for the Parkhead side in the 1960s and 1970s when the club's Barrowfield training ground was just along from the stadium in the east end of the city and when the players would come in to daily contact with the fans who milled around looking for autographs.[LNB]However, Auld believes a chasm between fans and players has developed since Celtic's new training complex, which is secreted away in the north of Glasgow, was opened in 2007.[LNB]Speaking at Hampden to publicise the Old Firm Co-operative Insurance Cup final at the national stadium on Sunday, he said: "I come from Glasgow and I knew what it was like to have a bad time for Celtic.[LNB]"The fans never slagged us but they knew that we were every bit as disappointed as they were if we had a bad game.[LNB]"But I feel as if they isolate themselves because they very seldom come in contact with the man who pays their wages.[LNB]"It is difficult to get to Lennoxtown.[LNB]"I still get a kick going in to Celtic Park, I love going there.[LNB]"I enjoyed seeing the players that were brought in the last five or seven years but since we have moved to Lennoxtown, I don't see them.[LNB]"I always thought that it was great when there two or three hundred people, youths and people out of work, waiting at Celtic Park for the players coming from Barrowfield and speaking to them because that is what it's all about.[LNB]"This is something I would love my grandkids to be able to do, say that they spoke to Scott McDonald and Aiden McGeady, and having them as their idols.[LNB]"Every Celtic supporter would wish for their children and grandchildren to play for Celtic.[LNB]"We have a fabulous superstore at Celtic Park and I would make the point that, if a player is injured, he should go down for an hour or two in the afternoon and go back to where we are from."[LNB]The Hoops have come in for renewed criticism since their shock Homecoming Scottish Cup quarter-final exit to St Mirren on Saturday.[LNB]Much of the spotlight has fallen on strikers Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras, who have failed to score in the last 25 games between them.[LNB]However, Auld insists the problems do not lie solely with the off-form strikers.[LNB]He said: "Samaras and Venegoor of Hesselink are going through a horrid time.[LNB]"You don't know who is the right man to partner Scott McDonald.[LNB]"But I don't just put it down to them, I don't think they are getting the right ball for them to attack and score. So we can improve on a lot of positions."[LNB][LNB] Rangers 13/8[LNB], Celtic 7/4[LNB], Draw 11/5[LNB]
