Agent: Scottish market short of money

Some SPL clubs are holding back from signing new players until July just to save a month's wages, according to top agent Gerry Carlile.[LNB] While there has been plenty of transfer speculation this summer actual deals have been slow to materialise.[LNB]Carlile is not surprised, putting the relative inactivity down to football's cash crisis amid global financial uncertainties.[LNB]The Belfast-based agent, whose clients include Kyle Lafferty of Rangers and Niall McGinn and Paddy McCourt of Celtic, said that while June has been slow due to clubs trying to save cash, more deals should start being made next week.[LNB]"It's slower than I've noticed before," he said:[LNB]"It is stagnant because clubs everywhere are cutting costs.[LNB]"And although people talk about the financial problems in the SPL, it is the same in England.[LNB]"And the whole game has been affected by the global financial situation.[LNB]"Clubs will hold off from signing players until July because they don't want to pay a June wage.[LNB]"Clubs are leaving it late, indeed some clubs haven't signed any players yet.[LNB]"There is still a lot of work going on in the background.[LNB]"I am still getting managers calling me and saying that they are still interested in this player and that player but clubs are afraid to make the jump at the moment."[LNB]While Carlile accepts that clubs have never had so much choice in terms of numbers, he believes managers would do well to finalise their squads as soon as possible.[LNB]He said: "I've noticed that there are a lot more players in the market and there is competition between them.[LNB]"There could be 100 players chasing one contract. It is crazy.[LNB]"But it will move in July and in to August.[LNB]"Clubs will be back to pre-season training and will realise that they are maybe weak in a certain position or that their squad as a whole needs strengthening.[LNB]"But it might get interesting as the weeks go on.[LNB]"Managers will have a list of players but it becomes a risky game if you hold off and hold off and find the players on your list have been snapped up.[LNB]"Then there will be a last-minute stampede.[LNB]"But things are fluid so everyone needs to be on the ball."
