Bergessio makes Catania move permanent

Argentine striker Gonzalo Bergessio has joined Catania on a permanent basis from Saint-Etienne after a successful loan spell, the Italian side announced on Friday.

"Gonzalo Bergessio is a Catania player," announced Catania general manager Pietro Lo Monaco, without revealing the transfer fee.

The 27-year-old scored five goals in 12 matches for Catania in Serie A last season after arriving in January, having failed to find the target for Saint-Etienne between August and December 2010.

Bergessio's arrival could push his in-demand countryman Maxi Lopez towards the Catania exit.

"If Maxi Lopez stayed it would mean we'd be hunting for flies with a cannon, because with him and Bergessio we'd have two extraordinary forwards," added Lo Monaco.

"In any case, Catania's transfer dealings have not yet finished."

Bergessio joined Saint-Etienne from Argentine club San Lorenzo in the summer of 2009.
