Murphy back with Carlisle

Carlisle United defender Peter Murphy has made a U-turn and agreed a new deal with the club only two months after rejecting a contract offer.

The 26-year-old has made almost 300 appearances for the Cumbrians since his arrival at Brunton Park from Blackburn Rovers six years ago, and boss Neil McDonald is delighted with the player's change of heart.

He told the club's official website: "He had a fantastic season with us last season. We all know that he has real ambitions to play at a higher level, but there's a time and a place for that.

"Hopefully, being the kind of player he is, he'll be helping us to get to that level anyway, especially with the way he can play.

"We kept 18 clean sheets last season, with him a part of that defence, and we hope to see him helping us to do even better this time round.

"You need strong characters in the dressing room.

"It's a long, hard season ahead, as it always is, and you need those players who can help to see everyone through."
