Carlisle United boss Neil McDonald has added Port Vale midfielder Jeff Smith to his squad and the 26-year-old is expected to play some part in Saturday's match against Brentford.
Smith has penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the Cumbrians after sealing a £60,000 switch from Vale.
Smith started his career at Hartlepool United and, after spells with Barrow Town and Bishop Auck, moved to Bolton Wanderers in March 2001.
However, he made only two appearances in three years for Sam Allardyce's side and, after loan spells with Macclesfield Town, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Preston North End, signed for Port Vale in the summer of 2004.
Smith made a total of 103 appearances for Vale and scored seven goals.
