Kavanagh vows to carry on
15 Jun 2009 - 11:25:12
Graham Kavanagh insists he has no plans to retire despite taking up a coaching role with Carlisle United.
Kavanagh, 36, still believes he can play a major part on the pitch for the Cumbrians next season despite accepting a position in Greg Abbott's backroom staff.
"Just because of my age, I'm no different to any other player. I still get a buzz from making a pass and sliding into tackles, so I want to continue for as long as I can," said the former Republic of Ireland international.
"But I don't want to play and not do myself justice, so I'll know and the gaffer will know when it is time to focus solely on the coaching side.
"At the moment, I still feel really fit and know I can go out and do a good job. It's a big season ahead of us and everybody is very optimistic about what could happen.
"We will be looking to get players in and freshen the squad so there will be pressure for places.
"Greg and I sat down last season and said we needed a young, energetic box-to-box midfielder who is totally different to what we have.
"We have a few ideas about players and we want to bring in someone, develop them and make an investment on them which is important to clubs like Carlisle."
