Kavanagh takes Carlisle role
09 Jan 2009 - 11:25:41
Carlisle United have appointedGraham Kavanagh in a player-coach role just hours after the midfielder was released by Sunderland.
Kavanagh had been loaned out to the Cumbrian side this season and Black Cats boss Ricky Sbragia has been looking to trim his huge squad at the Stadium of Light.
The veteran had been on the books at Sunderland since 2006, but made just 15 appearances for the club due to an injury-ridden couple of years.
The 35-year-old's contract was terminated by mutual consent and Carlisle moved in quickly to snap up the star who has made more appearances for them than his former employers.
Kavanagh has penned an 18-month contract which will see him help out in the coaching department, while continuing his on-field role with the League One side.
Manager Greg Abbott said: "We've already seen the influence that Graham brings into the dressing room and out on to the pitch, that's what experienced players can do for you.
"I think this is a very good signing for us, and I'm looking forward to working with him."
