Carlisle skipper Paul Thirlwell has signed a new one-year deal with the club with the option of a further 12 months. The 32-year-old midfielder, approaching 150 appearances for the Cumbrians, signed his new contract ahead of Saturday's home defeat to Yeovil. Manager Greg Abbott said: "Paul is a model professional and he's a superb influence in the dressing room. We've seen what he brings when he's involved and he's one that all of the players look up to. "He's a very good player and one that we know we can rely on, both on and off the pitch. Again, we're delighted with the news that he's agreed to stay with us, and it's another important part of the planning completed ahead of next season." Thirlwell initially joined Carlisle on loan from Derby in September 2006 and made the move permanent the following January.
