Taylor became an instant hero after joining the club on a month's deal from Doncaster when he scored in the midweek victory over Crewe to help ease fears of a relegation battle.
Preece watched him in action and believes that the 36-year-old will prove a vital addition to Greg Abbott's squad as they fight to escape the drop zone.
"I played against Gareth a number of times and I know what he is capable of," Preece told the Carlisle News & Star. "I was very impressed with him against Crewe.
"He's a really good targetman and they are becoming very rare these days.
"He will be a very big asset and his age won't matter because he is still very athletic and mobile."
