Pericard on target in Cumbrians win

24 October 2009 18:30
Ex-Portsmouth and Stoke striker Vincent Pericard made an instant impact for the Cumbrians on his home debut, scoring an early goal and providing the pass which sent in substitute Joe Anyinsah for the winner late on. Carlisle's high-tempo opening soon had Southend on the back foot and the Cumbrians went ahead in the 11th minute when Scott Dobie's persistence in winning possession on the right produced a low cross which Pericard turned home from close range. Although Carlisle keeper Lenny Pidgeley had to be alert with a reaction save to deny Francis Laurent, Carlisle went close again when Ian Harte's header thumped against the crossbar. The home side should have been well ahead before the break but were rocked back in the 43rd minute when an error by Pidgeley, who could only flap at Simon Francis' long throw, allowed Laurent to pounce and fire home from eight yards. Carlisle looked to have run out of steam after the break and Southend's Alan McCormack went close with a fierce drive from just outside the box. However, the home side regained the lead in the 80th minute when Pericard slipped a neat ball through to Anyinsah and the substitute coolly slid his shot past Steve Mildenhall and inside the far post.
