Captain Thirlwell out with calf trouble

Carlisle captain Paul Thirlwell will miss their npower League One clash with Bury.

The 33-year-old midfielder has had a series of calf problems throughout his career and had to come off in the first half of the victory over Hartlepool due to an injury in the same area.

Thirlwell could be joined on the sidelines by utility player Chris Chantler, who was also substituted against Pools after suffering a knock on his ankle.

Veteran forward Danny Cadamarteri is not expected to return until January due to a calf injury he picked up in training.

However, there is better news elsewhere for the Cumbrians as James Berrett nears full fitness.

The midfielder has been missing due to a groin injury but manager Greg Abbott admits he is closing in on a return.

Bury boss Kevin Blackwell could name an unchanged side.

Their goalless draw at Preston on Boxing Day was their second stalemate in a row but moves them to within two points of safety.

On-loan QPR striker Troy Hewitt is pushing for a starting place and could replace veteran David Healy should Blackwell wish to keep things fresh in the middle of a hectic fixture schedule.

Attacking duo Lenell John-Lewis and Andrai Jones both stepped off the bench at Deepdale and are pushing for inclusion against the Cumbrians.

Defenders Adam Lockwood (groin) and Phil Picken (knee) are long-term absentees, while Andy Bishop remains sidelined with a troublesome foot problem.
