Carlisle boss challenges youngsters
Youngsters Tom Aldred and Gary Madine were exempt from the relegation dogfight last season due to their inexperience but the gaffer has warned them to prove they are ready to step up.
Abbott told the Times & Star: "There's no time for babysitting anymore and both these players have got to show me they are ready to make the step up.
"There won't be any cotton wool as these kids are proper professional football players and they have to sink or swim off their own bat."
