The former Leeds and Republic of Ireland defender, 31, has signed a two-year deal at Brunton Park following his short-term deal at the end of the season when he made three appearances. Abbott said: "We want him to be a big influence and a big part of what we are doing and he's a player that I'm very excited about and I know the other players in the team will be pleased that we have signed him as well. "We talk about his experience, and he does have plenty of it, but we've signed him at a great time. He's still only in his early 30s and we think there is still plenty more to come as well. "The levels that he has played at and the things he has already done in his football career have got to be a big help to us. "I thought that he showed a real understanding and reading of the game in the three games that he played at the back end of the season and that tells me that he is going to cope with everything that's thrown at him. That's another asset that he will bring to the club for us."
