McPhail diagnosed with cancer

Cardiff City have revealed that midfielder Stephen McPhail has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 29-year-old former Republic of Ireland international is suffering from stage one malt lymphoma.

The former Leeds United and Barnsley midfielder is hoping to return to action in January following treatment.

"Stephen McPhail has been diagnosed with a stage one malt lymphoma, previously known as a pseudo lymphoma," read a club statement.

"Treatment is expected to last for three weeks with a return to football by January 2010.

"The club requests that the privacy of Stephen, his wife, and young family be respected during his recovery."

McPhail joined the Bluebirds in 2006 and has made more than 125 appearances for the Welsh club.
