Mason makes a point as City draw at Leeds
Joe Mason's 17th minute goal helped City towards a draw at Leeds Utd.
Robert Snodgrass levelled 17 mins from time after getting the final touch to a free kick launched from deep.
The first half opened with Aron Gunnarsson forcing a super save from the Leeds keeper before David Marshall made the first of a number of saves throughout the game that made him my man of the match.
A long ball for Joe Mason to chase in the 17th minute resulted in the opening goal. Mason hounded Darren O'Dea and with the help of a little nudge got the better of the Leeds man and rounded the keeper to score.
Cardiff competed in a reasonably even half but Leeds were the more progressive team and Marshall made at least three great stops.
The second half was more one way traffic with Leeds pushing and pushing. Marshall was in superb form diving left, right and tipping balls over the bar. Attempts at the other end were limited and Cardiff were content to hold on rather than to try to get a second goal.
Kenny Miller and Filip Kiss were 2nd half subs for Mason and Conway respectively, but Malky's hope of seeing out the game were dashed when Leeds equalised within minutes of Millers arrival.
Inevitably a goal came. Aron Gunnarsson slipped and in doing so tripped a Leeds player. Phil Dowd gave a free kick near the halfway line. The ball was launched into the box. The defence allowed Leeds to get the first touch and the ball went in from Snodgrass with Marshall helpless.
City's best efforts of the second half came after the leveller. The last 15 mins saw more action at the Leeds end than the rest of the half. Whittingham's strike was blocked and Gunnarsson nearly headed a late winner.
Leeds hadn't given up getting a winner and as a fan it was fingers over the eyes stuff watching the final minutes.
The last effort came when Ross McCormack was caught offside. Phew.
So could Cardiff have been more agressive in looking for a second goal?Yes probably.
Did Leeds deserve to get a goal? Yes they did.
Am I happy with a point? Yes. Always nice to be winning games but I think overall Leeds will feel they could have come back to win so for Cardiff to have gone away, taken the lead and come away without losing it's not the end of the world.
I would have taken 5 points from 9 this week. That means we need something from Wednesday's game at Derby. That's going to be another tough one.
The week ends with Crystal Palace at home next Saturday.
There have been reports that many City fans were ejected from Elland Rd for standing. Many more walked out in protest. I'm sure we'll hear more about via the messageboard as fans make their way home and re-tell their tales.
