Jones upbeat despite draw

30 Oct 2006 - 11:20:19

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones insisted he was pleased with his players despite seeing them concede a last-minute equaliser in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Derby County.

The Championship leaders twice led the game through second-half goals from Glenn Loovens and Michael Chopra, but had to settle for a point after Steve Howard and Giles Barnes made the most of Derby's rare excursions forward.

Despite the setback, results elsewhere ensured Cardiff extended their lead at the head of the table to four points.

"I think the stats show that Derby came to do a job and they got their little bit of luck at the end of the game," Jones told the Western Mail.

"We should have been well out of sight by then with the chances we had. But what can you do?

"If Chopra had had his shooting boots on in the first half, it would have been three or 4-0, and we'd have been well away from them.

"But we've got to take it on the chin and say, 'Well done Derby, you came and got what you wanted'."

He added: "It's a good point for us. It widens the gap a little bit more because the two teams right behind us lost. We wanted to take advantage of it and we have in a certain way.

"I'm disappointed in drawing the game, but I'm not disappointed in the way we played."
