Cardiff City will appeal Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's red card in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Colchester United.
The veteran striker was sent off in the 62nd minute for violent conduct after catching U's goalkeeper Dean Gerken in the face with a high boot.
However, Bluebirds boss Dave Jones claims referee Kevin Wright over-reacted and is planning to launch an appeal.
Hasselbaink is now set to miss the next three games, but would return in time for Cardiff's FA Cup semi-final meeting with Barnsley at Wembley next month.
"It wasn't a sending off and we will appeal," said Jones.
"Hopefully, the referee might take another look and decide it was a harsh decision.
"Jimmy went for the ball and never took his eyes off it. If the goalkeeper had caught Jimmy would it have been a penalty?
"If the suspension stands it will be a killer. We are already without Kevin McNaughton because of injury.
"Jimmy is a key part of our team and it's a real blow."
