Work ethic pleases Malky as City progress in Carling Cup

Manager comments after Cardiff beat Huddersfield by five goals to three in the Carling Cup. Cardiff survived a late scare before overcoming Huddersfield at Cardiff City Stadium. Coasting at half time by two goals to nil Cardiff handed Huddersfield a lifeline, then an equaliser before falling behind in the 88th minute. Just when it seemed it was all over Don Cowie headed Cardiff level with seconds of injury time remaining. City then went on to win in extra time. "We are delighted to go through," said City boss Malky Mackay. "There were times where we were comfortable and times where we looked as if we were heading out. "We were very good in the first half and comfortably leading 2-0 and should have been more. "We took our eye off the ball, stopped doing the correct things and gifted them the first goal. We gave them a sniff to get back into the match. "But all credit to us, with a minute left to go, if you were a betting man, you would have said we were going out so I was delighted with the work ethic again to score in the final minutes of the match. We played well in extra-time." Gabor Gyepes and Jon Parkin headed City into a two goal lead. Jordan Rhodes, Daniel Ward and then Rhodes again put Huddersfield in front before Don Cowie with another header levelled the scores. Those City fans who got up and left when Rhodes scored his second were busy trying to get back in to watch the extra 30 minutes, and they were treated to goals from Craig Conway and another from Cowie in extra time to send Cardiff into Saturday's draw for round 3. Huddersfield manager Lee Clark said: "We are disappointed to lose, especially when we were 3-2 up with 30 seconds of play left. "But I have been in the game for too long to know that a game is never won until the referee blows his whistle. "It's disappointing to concede goals like we did tonight. We have to stop these poor goals and defend better. It has overshadowed a terrific performance. "Alan Lee was outstanding and the catalyst to what we did. Everyone followed his lead. "He led the line, he was competitive, won numerous headers and his performance deserved a goal. He has given me food for thought and that's a huge positive for us."
