Defeat at Cardiff was one too many.

News came through late on Saturday evening that West Brom had sacked manager Steve Clarke after the 1 - 0 defeat at Cardiff City.

It capped a dreadful day for the Baggies that saw their team lose and their fans scuffling amongst themselves as they suffered a fourth defeat in a row.

Clarke has smiles before kick off

Speaking immediatealy after the game Clarke said

"We created some chances as we normally do," said Clarke. "At the moment things aren't quite going for us.

"I don't think it's a lack of confidence. We tried to pass the ball but Cardiff started brightly and put us on the back foot.

"We resisted them and stayed in the game. The longer the game went on, the more we played and the more chances we created. It's difficult.

"We have to work harder and hope we get a lucky break or that somebody does something fantastic. There is no magic formula or wand.

"It's difficult for the players. All we can do is keep trying as hard as we can to break the run as quickly as possible, starting next week against Hull."

But by 10om the following statement was on West Brom's official website:

WEST Bromwich Albion have this evening relieved Head Coach Steve Clarke of his duties and placed him on gardening leave with immediate effect.

This was the unanimous decision of the Football Club's Board of Directors following a disappointing performance throughout 2013.
