'Old hand' Joe helping out Matthews

Matthews, 17, has made a huge impression at right-back in Cardiff's promotion push this season and finds himself in the senior Wales squad for the first time against Scotland on Saturday.[LNB]Matthews will probably be on the bench for the friendly at Cardiff City's new stadium.[LNB]But it is still an exciting prospect for the Swansea-born youngster and Ledley, still only 22 himself, has taken Matthews under his wing.[LNB]Ledley said: "Adam is the latest up-and-coming lad at Cardiff. He's level-headed and is taking it all in his stride.[LNB]"I try to help him along, have a chat occasionally to help him relax. I remember what I was like at 17.[LNB]"I had people like Danny Gabbidon at Cardiff to look up to and give me advice. Now, although I'm only 22, I find myself doing the same with Adam.[LNB]"Adam is very laid back, he takes things in his stride. Now it is my turn to help a youngster along.[LNB]"He has Premier League potential and people will be looking at him, but I hope we can get into the top flight and keep him here. We all want to do this together."[LNB]Matthews said: "This season has been mad so far, I wasn't expecting to play as many first-team games for Cardiff and now I'm in the Wales squad. It's all a bit unreal.[LNB]"I was only in at the beginning of the season at Cardiff because of injuries, but I have hung onto the shirt and aim now to cement my place in the side.[LNB]"I thought I would not get much further than the bench this season, so it has been a tremendous boost for me.[LNB]"I try to take everything in my stride, I'm told I am very calm. I hope I can continue that way."[LNB]Swansea's loss has been Cardiff's gain as far as Matthews is concerned.[LNB]He explained: "I broke my arm when I was eight, just as I was about to have a trial with Swansea.[LNB]"When I recovered I went back to them and they told me their intake for the season was full.[LNB]"So I went to a Cardiff trial when there were about 40 other lads there and I was the only one they took on."[LNB][LNB] Wales 6/4, Scotland 6/4, Draw 9/4
