Malky pleased with Odemwingie signing

The boss believes he has picked up a real bargain and a player who will be an asset to Cardiff City.

Malky Mackay concluded his transfer business last night with the signing of Peter Odemwingie from West Brom.

“I’m delighted to sign a player with a proven record of scoring in the Premier League,” said Mackay.

“Peter’s record speaks for itself.

“He’s versatile, got great pace and does bring us that bit of experience we need.

“He’s an outstanding footballer at Premier League level, an intelligent footballer with a bit of guile.

“I spent a lot of time with him and he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person too.

“For the price we have got him for it is a great deal for Cardiff City Football Club.”

Odemwingie's age and experience will benefit City's attack with Mackay adding: “I think that was important, particularly in our forwards department.

“We lost Heidar Helguson in the summer and he was a good presence for us.

“I think Peter can do the same thing for us now, pass on a bit of his experience.

“He may be 32, but he’s a very fit lad.

“I was with him at his medical and it became very obvious  what good physical shape he is in.”.

Malky has no concerns about the incident last January that saw Odemwingie drive to QPR for a phantom signing that was heavily featured in the media. After that Odemwingie made just 7 appearances for Albion.

"It was simply that someone thought they were going to get a job at one place and then didn’t," Mackay said.

“There’s very little more to it than that.

“We did our usual research on the player, we talked to coaches he has worked with and players he has played with – they all came back without a bad word to say about him.

“All the reaction was very complimentary.

“He’s going to prove an asset for Cardiff City of that I’ve no doubt.”
