Laws praises 'exceptional' Esajas
The Dutch winger, who was restored to Laws' starting XI following his impressive cameo from the bench against derby rivals Sheffield United last week, scored one and set up the other two as the Owls recorded their first Championship win in four games.[LNB]His inch-perfect free-kick opened the scoring after just four minutes and, despite Peter Whittingham's leveller from the penalty spot, Esajas twice crossed from the left in the second half for Luke Varney and Leon Clarke to secure the points.[LNB]"I thought Esajas was very, very good today no doubt about that," said Laws. "He's been waiting for quite a while to get his opportunity and has probably been a bit frustrated, so I said 'You've earned the right and don't spoil it by trying to be clever'.[LNB]"And you can't ask for anymore than that, he's contributed to two goals and scored one himself."[LNB]Laws continued: "The one thing that has been the down side for Etienne has been not just his consistency but his injuries.[LNB]"But certainly today he was exceptionally good."[LNB]Wednesday twice hit the woodwork through Varney and Clarke but one of the main post-match talking points was the decision to disallow Michael Chopra's first-half lob with the scores level at 1-1.[LNB]The striker was adjudged to have been offside when he converted David Marshall's long ball over the top - one of two goals ruled out for the visitors.[LNB]But Laws was honest in the way he viewed the incident.[LNB]"I've got to say I thought they were very unfortunate not to get a goal as I thought Chopra's was actually onside if truth be known," said the Wednesday boss.[LNB]Cardiff manager Dave Jones was understandably frustrated with the decision, especially after seeing a Jay Bothroyd strike wrongly ruled out for offside in the midweek Carling Cup defeat at Aston Villa.[LNB]Jones also felt midfielder Joe Ledley was unfortunate to receive his marching orders in the 72nd minute after being shown two yellow cards.[LNB]"Everybody's going on about time added on in injury time but the bigger issue is getting the decisions right," said the Bluebirds boss.[LNB]"Chops' goal is a goal, he's not offside. It's as simple as that and I've been done today and I've been done on Wednesday night.[LNB]"I think Joe has been punished harshly because his first tackle was a good tackle.[LNB]"Again, it's a wrong decision from them."[LNB]Jones was honest in his assessment of the game overall however, and has called for his side to show some much-needed consistency after an indifferent start to the campaign. "We can't grumble about not winning a football match today because we didn't do enough in the second half," he said.[LNB]"We've got to be better and at the moment we're inconsistent, we'll have a good game, bad game and it's costing us."[LNB]He continued: "We've got a soft spot in us at the moment and the goals that we've given away in the second half are goals that can be stopped quite easily if players are going to do what's asked of them.[LNB]"But at this moment in time they're not doing it and that's the frustrating part."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
